why is it bad to put salt water fish in fresh water? What happens? (cells, etc.)?
OnlyVampyresKnow asked:
I need to know why salt water fish die in fresh water. Can someone tell me? I’m hoping it really relates to cells, osmosis, hypotonic, hypertonic, etc….

I don’t think they die in fresh water, I think it might be the other way around, fresh water fish die in salt water. Not sure though.

it does have to do with Osmosis. Because of the type of cells fish have the inside ration of salt and outside ration are always trying to be equal. If the water has more salt then the fluid in the cell all of the water will leave the cells causing a fish to dry out.
The oposit would happen putting a salt fish in fresh water. All of their cells would swell with water.

they will die. in salt water fish has more same amount of salt outside and inside so they don’t lose salt, also, they have lower concentrations of water inside than fresh water fish. if they were to swap around, the salt would defuse out of the fish and the blood becomes so diluted it does not carry much oxygen anymore. the fresh water fish will have more water inside their body so it starts diffusing out and the fish dies of dehydration
