Why can some Pacific salt water fish live in fresh water?
tkept asked:
Why can Coho and King Salmon live in fresh water inland lakes ( Great lakes for example ) when they are a Pacific salt water fish. I understand Atlantic Salmon can not. Also why can Dunginess crab only live in the Pacific or Maine Lobsters can only live in the atlantic ? The temperatures are the same for the most part. Is there a big difference in the salinity of the water?

It has to do with the fish’s kidneys.
Fish that can move between salt and fresh water (like salmon) have heavy-duty kidneys that can automatically keep the water content and electrolytes in it’s bloodstream and body tissues properly balanced regardless of what type of water it’s in.

There is a difference in the salinity between the Atlantic and Pacific. That is the reason one species can not survive in the others ocean. The Atlantic has more salt. There are lobsters in both oceans but they are totally different varieties. Crabs also are different kinds. The Pacific Salmon is born in fresh water, goes to the ocean and returns to spawn in fresh water at the end of its life. They can live there whole life in fresh water lakes and are planted around here 500 miles from the Pacific and thrive.
